Education to the national gas industry
Pipeline quality gas is a standard that quantifies gas to provide an apple-to-apple comparison for customers. It’s similar to the gasoline label at the pump that shows 5-6 grades of gasoline — hopefully, you choose one that your engine is tuned for. Does pipeline gas vary like the grades of gasoline? You bet! This chart shows the day-to-day variation that an engine might see as supply changes from shale, to conventional on shore, and off shore supply. How often should you look at the chromatograph readings to check your fuel quality and update your engine control logic? Have you ever had your weekend, or birthday, or anniversary ruined by a failure on a reciprocating compressor? Wouldn’t it be great if you could see that failure coming and fix the issue before it became a real problem? Condition Monitoring is the process used to help identify these failures before they happen. If you don’t know what a frame vibration sensor is (or where to put it), we can help with that! Bicera doors – keeping oil wipers in business since the beginning of time.
Seriously though, Bicera doors play a critical role in our workplace, serving 2 purposes. One is well known, but the other is often overlooked. The Bicera valves are designed to relieve pressure in the event of an overpressure occurrence in the crankcase. A crankcase event is the most common occurrence leading to activation of the Bicera. But there is another function, which is to close as quickly as possible to ensure that the crankcase event doesn’t get a fresh gulp of oxygen through a backdraft. Cue the mental images of the firefighting movie we are all thinking of… Learn more at the Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable, September 14-16, 2021 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh, PA or contact us for more information.

For most of the world, foundations are designed to support the weight of something. But in the gas compression industry, we use the mass of the foundation to hold an engine down. So if you are ever around a foundation replacement and see the engine supported by the teeny-tiny, little supports, it can be alarming… but it is perfectly safe. One of the rules in nature is to steer clear of anything (dead or alive) with a bloated belly. Engine crankcase pressure can be viewed in the same manner. The higher that pressure, the more likely something bad could happen. In the dead analogy: If you have an engine offline that is showing crankcase pressure, it could be a packing leak that could lead to a fire or explosion. In the living analogy, crankcase pressure is an awesome single point indicator of engine health. It can be very useful in preventative maintenance efforts and troubleshooting. Anytime you see a high crankcase pressure it is increasing the probability of a crankcase event. How much CC pressure is too much? We can help with that!
